Weekly methodological help

We try to address the most important issues related to preparing Cochrane reviews at our protocol and Review Manager workshops. Sometimes, however, reviewers encounter problems for which they will need particular assistance here and now. If you are finding yourself in such trouble, you are welcome to contact the office in Oslo or Copenhagen. Andy Oxman and Peter Gøtzsche will usually be available on Wednesdays between 2 and 3 p.m., and you are also welcome to contact other centre staff if that is more appropriate for your problem, but please book in advance:

Please note already now the date in your calendar for the 1999 meeting: Thursday, January 28, 1999. The draft programme is:

New group coming up?

One of the few areas which is not yet covered by one of the existing review groups, is anaesthesia. Drs Tom Pedersen and Ann Møller at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen (the same place where the Colorectal Cancer Group is located), have started to explore the possibility of establishing a Cochrane Anaesthesia Group. If you wish to participate or be informed of progress, please contact:

How are we doing?

Since the last newsletter, 2 new issues of the Cochrane Library have appeared. The number of reviews has increased from 6 to 9, number of protocols from 9 to 14, with more to come. It would be nice it we could sustain this growth rate for a while. New Nordic contributions are:

New reviews:

Adding betablockers to standard medication for schizophrenia
CSF tapping after IVH
Intraventricular streptokinase after IVH

New protocols:

Amphotericin B vs lipid soluble amphotericin B
Clozapine vs newer 'atypicals' for schizophrenia
Crohn's maintenance, 5 aminosalicylate therapy
In-hospital maternal-infant skin-to-skin contact
Institutional versus at home long term care

(The abbreviations are those of the authors, not mine!)

We can always use new handsearchers and reviewers so please remember our workshops in September in Helsinki, see: www.cochrane.dk.
